Not far from Central Park and the hustle and bustle of metro NY/NJ, Center Bridge Inn is perfect for a weekend, perfect for a week, perfect for a wedding!! Why not combine your time at this great Inn in New Hope, PA with a Walkabout with ZaZa. We’ll start photographing inside this charming inn, moving to the patio where your wedding ceremony/celebration and cocktail hour will take place. Then, let’s cross the picturesque bridge to Stockton. NJ where you can make a wish at the famous wishing well. Back across the bridge for an ice cream and a bike ride along the canal—40 miles of bike paths!! Amazing how many great photo memories can be created in such a small area!  We’ll make you a digital photo album that will last a lifetime! Or, combine the Walkabout images in a keepsake album for your wedding, anniversary, engagement, bar mitzvah–whatever the great event you’re celebrating!!!  To learn more about the Inn, contact:  Melissa Lefchak,  Event Coordinator

Just got the results from the NJ Professional Photographers Association (PPANJ) print competition. I entered four images this year and each image earned a Red Ribbon-just below the higher honor. The judging is tough and the competition fierce, so I’m pleased.

Entering competitions keeps this NJ photographer sharp! The very first image I entered in a competition was 30 years ago– that photo of an American flag reflecting back into the window of a white colonial house won first prize in a State of Connecticut tourism contest– $500 was a fortune back then!!

The image above shows two dancers from the very talented Amalgamate Dance Company of NYC. Taken with ambient light only during a live performance. Next is a “Kiss to Remember” shot in a backyard at an at-home Bat Mitzvah party.  I used my Canon 5D Mark II and enhanced the image in Photoshop to highlight the viewer’s attention on those sweet faces. Also  using the same camera and window light only is the tender moment between the husband and his very pregnant wife. The contrast between his “roughness” evidenced by t-shirt contrasts well with her dreaminess and softness.

Finally, the image of the solo dancer was taken at an outdoor evening performance in 1982.  I pushed the black and white film to its limits and pushed the processing in the dark room. The image remained very grainy until it was converted to digital and met up with Photoshop where the grain was softened and the satiny light enhanced. To do this day it remains my all time favorite image. By the way, feel free to contact me about purchasing any of these images.

Step down the aisle in a gorgeous dress and don’t forget the shoes! I shot a wedding where the bride wore white flip flops! May have been comfortable for standing during the ceremony, but in terms of photos and elegance, a bit lacking in style– in this North Jersey photographer’s opinion. With a bit of creativity, a good wedding photographer can turn a pair of shoes into a work of art that will make your photo album unique–just like you! For example, I shot a pair of silver heels on purple net with the bridal bouquet on top of a grand piano–cool!!! A shot of you and your new hubby walking in the grass barefoot while you swing your shoes makes for a natural, fun shot. And the list goes on…

Visit the virtual shoe museum online and get lots of great ideas for shoes that will enhance your look!  On this most important day, you are a total package of loveliness, from head to toe! Of course, bring an extra pair of more comfortable flats for letting loose and dancing the night away!!!

It’s the Law!!!

Here are some important points to know about photography copyrights. If you want more information, you can go to the Professional Photographers of America web site or call them at 1-800-786-6277. www.ppa.org

1. Copyright law gives a professional photographer certain exclusive rights, including the right to: reprint the photograph, sell reprints of the photo, create modified images based on the photo and display the image publicly.

2. Just because a photograph is on the Internet does not mean it is in the public domain

3. Copyright law protects the photographer even if the photographer has not gotten a copyright registration and even if the photograph is published without a copyright notice.

4. You can be personally liable for copyright infringement even if you did not mean to break the law.

5. Purchasing prints of a photo or a CD or DVD from a professional photographer does NOT transfer the copyright of the photo to you without a release.

6. Reputable printers and large companies such as Costco will want to see a written release form before you print photographs from a professional photographer.

Be sure to have this important discussion regarding releases and copyright with your professional photographer!

Is marriage success a matter of luck? A lucky wedding date or just plain hard work??  Proposal season is here and lucky dates are in… A couple of years ago 07/07/07 was a big one. Next year 10/10/10 –a Sunday– is already making the blogs and discussion groups. I’ve even seen 11/11/11 in discussion. And for good measure, there’s 12/12/12–the 13th of 2013 will be popular, too!

For now, if you want October 10, 2010 as your wedding anniversary you better start planning! North Jersey wedding photographers are already booking well into next year; NYC is without a doubt booking quickly!  You want to contract with the Bergen County or Manhattan photographer who’s best for you, so no last minute planning of your wedding photography!

Lucky numbers lend themselves to themes of color, clothing, music, dance music, costumes and more. Be creative…have fun and remember to get the best engagement and wedding photographer you can afford. Photography memories last forever!

These photos were taken at my shoot of Lucky 07/07/07 in red.

page-0011Whether you are looking for a photographer for a family portrait, engagement portrait or a Bar or Bat Mitzvah portrait, you will have to decide with your photographer on the style you want. I think of the choice in style as being formal versus informal, traditional versus contemporary, posed versus photojournalistic or candid. It’s your preference!!

Your clothes, makeup, location, and even posture and affect will all be determined by the style you choose. You need to select the kinds of photography that feels right and comfortable to you.

In working with your photographer, you may decide to change clothes or even settings and have both styles in one shoot. That way you have a choice; for example, of a traditional family portrait painting on canvas for the living room wall and more informal images shot in a park, the beach or your own backyard for your digital album or magazine style book. Same goes for engagement photos and even Bar and Bat Mitzvah portraits. Personally, this photographer likes the idea of combining styles for variety and choice.  In this post are portraits I’ve taken that show the difference between “formal” and “informal” styles.

(All Photos by Nancy Katz ©) What a bummer!! Your engagement shoot is scheduled for this weekend and your photographer says you can’t re-schedule because of the busy wedding photography season. What to do???!!! You wanted to go to the beach!! Impossible?? No!! This NJ/NYC wedding photographer loves to shoot in Asbury Park along the boardwalk. Even if it’s raining, you have the protection os some fantastic architecture and spots to pose–there’s even a covered outdoor restaurant with couches and beds that would make for fabulous engagement photos! So, don’t despair this rainy, stormy weekend. Talk with your engagement photographer whether you’re in NYC, NJ or in my world–Bergen County- and come up with some creative venues that provide protection from the rain yet are in the outdoors (think covered gazebos coffee cafes, church entrances, and more!). Use your imagination and your engagement photos will be fabulous!
